The September 17th HBO pay-per-view main event is big enough as is, solely for the main event, as the biggest draw in the sport, Floyd 'Money' Mayweather, makes his return to the ring after a 16-month layoff against WBC welterweight champion 'Vicious' Victor Ortiz. Mayweather's name alone will easily produce over 1 million pay-per-view buys, but Golden Boy Promotions is doing everything in its power to make sure 2 million buys is not only attained, but is expected. I have been very
critical of the split site undercard, which features Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez taking on Alfonso Gomez from Staples Center in Los Angeles, while the Mayweather vs Ortiz fight takes place in Las Vegas. I have been of the impression that Alvarez should headline an HBO fight card the following week since the date and venue is still available. However, with the announcement that Lucas Matthysse will replace Jorge Barrios and face Erik Morales, we now have two 'Star Power' fights and one fight of the year candidate.

Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz should be a good fight, but nothing memorable. Expect Alvarez to dominate Gomez. But the Morales-Matthysse fight is going to be a war. Enough said! I would pay $59.95 to watch these two warriors battle it out without the other fights included. If this fight is not the best fight on the card, or one of the top 10 fights of the year, I would be stunned. Mayweather will bring in the majority of the fans. Alvarez brings Mexico, so does Morales, but the fact he is facing Matthysse is just an added bonus. Add Jessie Vargas vs. Josesito Lopez, and you have the best fight card in recent memory.
